Tools / Pressure Equipment Category Determination
Pressure Equipment Category Determination
A free tool that determines the category of pressure equipment under the Pressure Equipment Regulation (2014/68/EU) and the applicable conformity-assessment modules.
Use the results as a preliminary assessment rather than an official classification.
Complete the form on the left and select “Calculate category” to see the result.
Category map
Coloured regions show the classification areas.
The horizontal axis is volume (V, litres) or nominal diameter (DN); the vertical axis is maximum allowable pressure (PS, bar). The red star marks your entered point.
How it works
Enter the equipment type (vessel, piping or pressure steam generator), the state and group of the fluid it contains, followed by the operating pressure (PS) and volume (V) or nominal diameter (DN). The tool locates these values on the applicable Annex II table, determines the category and lists the corresponding conformity-assessment modules. The result is also displayed on a PS–V or PS–DN chart so you can see how close the entered point is to a category boundary.
Inputs
Equipment type
Vessel, fire extinguisher, piping, pressure steam generator, safety accessory or pressure accessory
Fluid state
Gas/vapour/superheated liquid or liquid
Fluid group
Group 1 (hazardous) or Group 2
PS and V/DN
Maximum allowable pressure (bar) and volume (litres) or nominal diameter (DN)
Outputs
Category
Exempt, sound engineering practice or Category I–IV
Table used
The Annex II table underlying the result, for traceability
Conformity-assessment modules
Module options corresponding to the category
Position on the PS–V chart
Visual position of the entered point relative to category boundaries
This tool is a preliminary-assessment tool prepared on the basis of the Pressure Equipment Regulation (2014/68/EU). Its result is for information only and does not replace an official classification, declaration of conformity or engineering calculation. Final assessment and responsibility rest with the manufacturer, employer and qualified technical personnel. The current official text of the legislation takes precedence.
