What Is Extover®?

Extover® is a new, environmentally friendly fire-extinguishing and fire-prevention granulate made from recycled glass.

When a burning surface is covered with Extover®, the specially manufactured granules displace the air and thereby separate the burning material from oxygen. At a certain temperature, the granules melt like glass, absorbing thermal energy from the burning material and cooling the fire. At the same time, they form an impermeable layer over the combustible material. This effectively prevents further reaction with oxygen.

The granules are manufactured with a multicellular, porous structure. This makes them easy to transport while preserving their flowability and preventing clumping. Material remaining after an extinguishing operation can be reused repeatedly. Different granule sizes also make the product suitable for use in portable fire extinguishers.

Where Can It Be Used?

• Extinguishing fires involving metals such as aluminium, titanium, magnesium, sodium and lithium,
• Extinguishing lithium battery fires,
• As packaging fill and a fire-prevention material during the storage and transport of lithium batteries,
• As a filling material for the transport and storage of hazardous substances,
• As a fire-prevention and extinguishing material in cable ducts,
• As an oil-absorbing, fire-prevention and extinguishing material in transformer bunds,
• In collection trays beneath machinery such as presses to prevent and extinguish oil fires,
• Extinguishing flares thrown at stadiums or events.

Extover® has undergone metal-fire extinguishing tests at MPA Dresden in Germany. Tests have also been conducted in which it was poured over spilled flammable and combustible liquids in storage areas to absorb the liquids and prevent a possible fire.
